Telemedicine allows the long-distance care of patients or, more broadly, the remote provision of health-related services, by using medical and computer techniques. Thanks to the collaboration between the medical personnel, the IT division and the suppliers, A.S.P. Ragusa is one of the first Health Authorities in Italy to start 4 telemedicine projects.

Remote medical examination

Remote medical examination allows the audio/video online interaction between the patient and the doctor, as well as the real-time sharing of documents, such as pharmaceutical and specialist prescriptions, analyses results and diagnostic imaging reports, thus enabling patients to get a consultation from a medical specialist easily from home. Remote medical examination received a positive response from patients with reduced mobility, as well as from those who live a long way from the hospitals of A.S.P. Ragusa.

Pilot Operative Units:
  • Advanced Operative Unit of Cardiology – Ospedale Giovanni Paolo II of Ragusa (Director: Dr. Antonino Nicosia);
  • Advanced Operative Unit of Neurology - Ospedale Guzzardi of Vittoria (Director: Dr. Antonello Giordano).

Telerehabilitation

Telerehabilitation allows the entire team to perform cognitive and motor telerehabilitation, by means of a kit consisting of sensors and high-resolution video cameras, which is provided to patients. Medical activities are carried out by means of gamification procedures.

Pilot Operative Unit:
  • Advanced Operative Unit of Physiatry - Ospedale Regina Margherita (Director: Dr. Sara Lanza).

Telemonitoring

Telemonitoring activities are performed by means of applications for Android and IOS mobile devices. Current functions of the apps include: chat for communicating with the doctor; tasks given to the patient by the doctor, such as taking a medicine, performing a measurement or an activity; displaying and management of appointments. Moreover, a dashboard with all the data collected by the apps is available to the doctor, with the purpose of evaluating health conditions variations during monitoring.

Pilot Operative Units:
  • Advanced Operative Unit of Cardiology – Ospedale Giovanni Paolo II of Ragusa (Director: Dr. Antonino Nicosia);
  • 2nd Family Counseling Center of Ragusa (Director: Dr. Nunziata Pace).

Teleconsultation

Teleconsultation allows online communication between healthcare professionals. The cooperation protocol with the Ospedale Garibaldi of Catania is currently operative, while the teleconsultation between general practitioners and specialists will soon be available, thanks to the mediation of the C.O.T.s (Centrale Operativa Territoriale - Territorial Operations Center).
