The Authority Advanced Division of Legal Medicine carries out planning and coordination activies pertaining the three related district units (Ragusa, Modica and Vittoria). It provides operating models aimed at simplifying and conforming legal healthcare services with regulations and procedures, in order to make users’ access to services easier. Public Access Desk

  • Assessment of severe diseases which require life-saving treatments, aimed at quantifying sick leave periods;
  • Assessment of suitability for national and international adoption of minors;
  • Checkups for the assessment of temporary incapacity for work (ex article 300 - Workers' Statute);
  • Certifications for voting purposes (accessible voting, polling places accessibility, home voting…);
  • Forensic medicine examinations provided for by Mortuary Police regulations.

The regulatory framework is represented by the Ministry of Health Decree of 28th April 1998, which, in the article 3, estabilishes that “The verification of the minimum psychophysical requirements for the issue and renewal of the rifle carry license for hunting purposes and for the practice of clay target shooting, and of the firearms carry license for self-defense, have to be performed by the legal healthcare offices or by the health districts of the local health units or by military and State Police health divisions”.

The applicant who undergoes the examinations has to submit a medical history certificate, issued by general practitioners and dated no earlier than three months prior to the submission, which has to be filled out in compliance with the form attached to the Decree, as referred to in the article 25 of the Law No. 833 of 23rd December 1978. The medical practitioner who issues the certificate, upon first access to the outpatient clinic, will prescribe the further specific medical tests which are deemed necessary, which will be performed in public healthcare facilities. The certificate is issued, following a legal medicine examination, to the applicant. Verdicts of unfitness have to be forwarded by the Legal Medicine Operative Unit to the competent Public Safety Authority of the territory of registered residence of the applicant, within five days.

  • Commissions for legal disability;
  • Assessments in opposition to the verdicts pertaining the fitness for firearms carry and possession;
  • Collegial assessments aimed at ascertaining exemptions from duties and/or changes of tasks of employees which are due to psychophysical unfitness;
  • Collegial medical examinations in opposition to the verdicts of assessing doctors;
  • Other legal medicine assessments which are provided for by the regulations in force.
